ORIUNITE is a European project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Sport program that aims to promote dialogue, cooperation, and reconciliation among cross-border communities, using the sport of orienteering as an educational, cultural, and social tool.

How the project was born and its goals

The project was born in Nicosia, Europe’s last divided capital city, where the dream of symbolically uniting the two parts of the city with a single orienteering map turned into a powerful symbol of peace. From there, the idea spread to other symbolic places marked by conflicts or historical divisions, such as Mostar, Sarajevo, Berlin, the border areas between Slovenia and Italy, and many more.

The project’s goals are:

  • To promote cultural interaction among young people from different communities.
  • To overcome prejudices and barriers through shared experiences.
  • To strengthen the sense of European citizenship and historical awareness.
  • To use orienteering to stimulate cognitive, motor, and social skills.

Activities in Friuli Venezia Giulia

The FISO FVG Committee participates in the ORIUNITE project alongside one of the two selected Italian partners, the ORMA association, with the goal of organizing:

  • Awareness workshops in schools and youth centers (July 2025 – September 2026);
  • A cross-border orienteering event with a unified map, crossing the border and symbolically uniting two communities (April 2026 – March 2027);
  • Cultural and exchange events that enhance local traditions and encourage encounters between territories and people.

All activities will be designed with a cross-border perspective and will actively involve Slovenian partners as well, in order to enhance our border and its unifying potential.
